I can't imagine The Traitor Baru Cormorant was an easy book to follow. It was such a finely-honed tragedy that a sequel could have felt superfluous. But, wisely, Monster is an entirely different beast. This is a wider-ranging, looser, more confident book, and it takes aim right away at the first book's conclusions. Is making herself into a solitary weapon really the best way for Baru to fix the world? Is destroying the empire only going to make things worse? What was implicit in the first becomes more explicit - Baru is an almost-functioning alcoholic with some serious trauma and while she is a savant, she's severely hampered by her various blind spots (both literally and figuratively). Her new companions and adversaries are great foils to her worldview and, just as in the first, there are no easy answers.There's plenty of really fascinating world-building going on here, which I won't spoil, only to say that it was pretty damn unique. I didn't at ALL expect the direction the story would go in. Throw-away hints from the first really pay off. I was also really happy to meet a third gender character who goes by they/them pronouns, something I haven't run into in a fantasy book before. (And why is that so rare, anyway? The human experience is vast and you'd think building a whole new world would be an opportunity for an author to move beyond the social mores of, you know, 1950s America, but what do I know.)This is the first half of a book that was split into two, and it does show (i.e. there is a cliffhanger, be warned). But there's plenty here to sink your teeth into. I read The Traitor Baru Cormorant twice, once when it first came out and again when The Monster Baru Cormorant was published. I loved the book, perhaps even more on the second reading.The Traitor Baru Cormorant has a linear plot thrust: Baru is seeking power so that she can change Falcrest from within and save her people and country. The course that she follows is equally linear.The Monster Baru Cormorant doesn't have a similar linear arc of plot. In fact, there isn't even a partial resolution to the plot in the second book. The plot just meanders around, collecting madness and weirdness. The power and drama of the first book is entirely missing here.Apparently four books are currently planned. Perhaps the problem with The Monster Baru Cormorant is that it is a bridge book. Often bridge books, the sort of second act in the story, are a slog and I definitely found this book a slot. I didn't find it a compelling read in the way I found first book. I could only finish it because I wanted to see where it was going. In fact, it didn't really go anywhere. That's left to the third book, or perhaps the third and fourth books.With the plodding plot of The Monster Baru Cormorant Seth Dickinson faults as a writer come to the fore. He loves to lard his books with strange and archaic usages. It is as if he has some kind of arcane thesaurus that he references all too often. Reading the book on Kindle has the advantage of being able to look up some of the strange words, like "Griot".I don't rule out buying the third book in the hope that the magic of the first book will return. But I found The Monster Baru Cormorant a disappointment.Later...I purchased the third book, The Tyrant Baru Cormorant. Unfortunately it was no better than the second book and suffers from the same failings. Perhaps Seth Dickenson is getting so lost in trying to portray a "message" that he's lost the skill of creating a compelling plot.
